We Should Presume Before We Assume

You and a few friends are standing in front of the mall waiting for a friend, when one says I assumed he would be here.

You and your friend are talking about Lady Gaga’s new video and assume because it is on u tube she has seen it.

You work for hospice and your new patient has lung cancer, you automatically assume it was because he smoked.

Assume

We all use assume even though it makes an ass out of u (you) and me.

Some of the things we assume are; homeless people are alcoholics, people on welfare are lazy, all politicians are corrupt, smokers are the only ones who get lung cancer, alcoholics get cirrhosis of the liver, and our friends watch the same things we do.

The major problem with assume is it is suppose to happen without checking or confirming.

When a friend does not show up or misses a Lady Gaga video no one is hurt but when it pertains to the hospice patient the consequences can be devastating.

The hospice patient was not a smoker was dealing with chemotherapy, radiation, was on oxygen, and society viewed him as an addict who got what he deserved. This assumption makes it harder to deal with the disease because of the added mental and emotion strain.

Presume

The public seldom uses this word in conversation. The reason being it has meaning behind it, and it is extremely likely something will happen.

If you called your friend and he did not show up, you would use the word presume.

When talking about the Lady Gaga video you would presume, your friend saw the video.

When speaking with hospice patients about smoking, they would be more receptive to the word presume because it is more of a question than an assumption.

We are all guilty when it comes to assuming things and do it without even thinking. Small things have turned into mountains do to this small blunder.

Maybe, if we presume before we assume there will be fewer asses in this world.

When was the last time you assumed when you should have presumed? I would love to hear your story.
