Recreational Vehicles Are Monsters Of The Roadways

I waited to enter the highway as a caravan of RV’s passes by. Sitting there, I count twenty, before pulling onto the highway, move to the middle lane, begin to pass, and am amazed at their length and width. I wonder how the driver backs up, but realize many have cameras.

The owners prefer to be called RVer’s, have clubs, enjoy seeing the country, do not have time-lines, and the majority are retired. They plan trips for months and stop at RV parks to meet old friends along the way. RVer’s are indignant when someone calls their vehicle a trailer, as they prefer mobile home.

I consider them gas guzzling, road hogging, monstrous tin cans on wheels that are more dangerous than tractor-trailers. The driver is often elderly with slower reflexes and poor eyesight; add bad weather and it becomes the perfect formula for an accident. The cost to operate these tin cans is astronomical, but owners believe the money saved on restaurants and hotels is worth every penny, and they get to see America close-up.

Leaving the caravan in my wake I would rather fly than travel in one of these tin canisters with all the comforts of home and wonders how cozy, they are at three AM with rain pouring down.
