I watched my friend Bill log onto Face book allowing him to communicate with his grandchildren, who live out of state. Face book gives grandparents the ability to connect with their loved ones and view pictures instantly. Skype allows them to join in birthday celebrations even though they are not physically present.
In the past, grandparents lived in the same household or town, and were an integral part of their grandchildren’s upbringing. Time passed and children moved away from their birthplace, with telephone and mail being the only forms of communication.
Letters and pictures were mailed but when received was old news and some did not write leading to lapses that could encompass years. The telephone was better than the mail as grandparents and grandchildren could hear each other’s voices, and exchange stories.
My grandparents resided in the same city, and when I moved only spoke to them during the holidays. Today, I am thankful for the new technology available enabling me to interact visually with my grandchildren.
