Putting out the trash, I saw a small shadow move under the oak tree in the front yard. A cat emerged, stopped, crouched down, glanced in my direction, remained inert, watched me put out the trash, and when I glanced over again was gone.
Cats are the red headed step child of the pet world in America as they are independent and people prefer dependent pets.
They groom continuously, use a litter box, and can live alone as long as there is food and water. They are nocturnal, sneak around, leap up at will, always land on their feet when dropped, are loners, and have nine lives. People are fearful when they look them in the eye, and make people feel they are looking into their soul. Hunting is in their nature and out door cats often leave a trophy from their successful hunt on the door step. This behavior offends many as having a pet that kills indiscriminately is offensive.
Cats are easier to take care of but are independent so to combat this behavior de-claw and spay them. The result is a docile pet unable to protect itself, making them an indoor pet, but still keep their best qualities. They adapt to this defenselessness with intelligence, but the end result is they become fatter, sluggish, and grow older quicker.
Cat owners prefer them to thrive in their own environment and adhere to their ways. Their relationship is based on mutual respect and companionship, as cats are only affectionate when they want to be, and not when the owners want.
Cats will always be the second choice in the pet world, as they do not love unconditionally, are independent, and owners do not want their pet to be their equal.
