While on vacation I played golf with my son-in-law Shurmon who gave me a beat down. We laughed and joked about the game as Shurmon put the golf bags in his trunk, and then left to retrieve his children from the babysitter.
I had to pick up my brother at 5pm from work, but had time, as it was 2:45, and only 50 miles away. Approaching the car,I reached in my pocket, and the only thing there was five years of lint.
Light dawned over Marble Head, as I realized my money and wallet were in the golf bag heading to my daughter’s house 30 miles in the wrong direction. I kicked myself in the buttocks twice (at my age was hard to do), sat in the car, figured out my options, and wished I owned a cell phone. This wish was very brief, as one was not going to materialize so I would have to devise a plan.
The gas gauge told me 20 miles tops, which might get me to another daughter who was closer, so off I went.
Arriving at my daughter’s, I knew nobody was home as the driveway was empty, but fate intervened as the neighbor next door came out of her house. I called to her, got her attention, went over, and explained my predicament. She listened intently, and when I finished, laughed for five minutes, told me to buy a cell phone, gave me 20 dollars, and sent me on my way.
The gas fumes coming out of the tail pipe directed me to the nearest gas station.
I was now, 70 miles from my destination, had plenty of gas, did not have my driver’s license, and prayed there were no radar traps, as going to jail was not on my agenda. I pulled up in front of my brother’s work placed at 5:15, he got into the car and I began narrating the story, and when I finished he laughed hysterically, and told me to buy a cell phone.
I enjoy solving problems the old fashion way, it keeps my mind sharp. The convenience of a cell phone would have been helpful but as you can see, there are always other options. By the way, I still do not own a cell phone.
