As the older man stood at the check out counter in the grocery store he could over hear two people arguing about the football game played that afternoon. It was obvious they were two twenty year olds who were rooting for different teams. The winner was bragging about how superior his team was to the loser. The loser was obviously not listening as he was bringing up all the past accomplishments of his team. As the two went on and on and on the older mans mind began to wander. It was really not about the game at all but who was right. Over the years he could remember all the different discussions, arguments, and fights he had been involved in. Most had been regarding ego. Everyone wants to be right and we use words to accomplish this. When we win are ego is elated. When we lose we immediately start to think about the next argument and how we are going to win. Often we don’t think about how our words are affecting the other person. It is all about us. Some arguments that started over a trivial matter mushroom into an all out war that can last for days, months, years, decades or even till death. What a waste. The only thing that cannot be undone is death. If you offend an immediate family member you should apologize after the storm has settled down. The longer you wait the worse it will become and the harder it will be to apologize. Its all about the ego and takes a real man or women to admit some of the things they said were wrong and are sorry. On the other hand the person should take the apologies with grace and together they can continue on with their lives together with no animosity.
Mister, the cashier said, “That will be $5.00.” The older man came out of his reverie paid the $5.00 and as he walked out of the store, he saw the two boys in the parking lot joking and horsing around. As he approached his car he smiled, for these two were on the right track.
